Folios 232-233: David Hotchkis, HMS Puissant, Spithead. As the ship rides too high out of the water he asks for iron ballast to be provided. He asks for quaified Men to mast and dismast the ship. There are only 122 Men on board most of whom have some disability and only 1 Seaman. He asks for 50 Men, a Master at Arms, Carpenter, Gunner's Mate, Sailmaker, Armourer and Coxwain. There are no cannons or muskets on board other than those of the Marines who have no ammunition. He asks what is the rate of the ship.
Folio 234: Enclosure with folios 232-233. Admiraly note. Order for ballast has been submitted to the Navy Board. Men to mast and dismast would be provided by the port Admiral. Ammunition should be demanded from the Marines' Lieutenant. A Master at Arms and a Coxwain are to be allowed but not Carpenters, Gunner's Mate, Sailmaker or Armourer.
