Folios 217-218: George Hope, HMS Romulus, Gibraltar. The Master of an American sloop which arrived from Madier, reported that last month he fell in with a line of Dutch battle ships, 3 large frigates, 20 gunships and 2 English prizes sailing to the south west to the L'Isle de France and Batavia [Jakarta] . They told him they had taken 20 English merchant ships and sent them back in convoy. Afterwards he saw HMS Moselle, Captain Brisbane commanding, at Madiera who had seen the same convoy at the Canary Islands.
