Description

Folios 204-205: Rodham Home, HMS Africa, the Downs. He left Jamaica on 8 June 1796 with HMS Iphigenia and HMS Scorpion and has arrived safely in the Channel with all of the ships of the Jamaica convoy, which came through the Gulf of Florida. 5 ships were left behind close to Havana, Cuba, due to inattention to signals. On 24 July 1796 his convoy was joined by the Duke of Montrose, East Indiaman from Martinique laden with sugar, from whom he learned that the Windward Island Convoy was 3 days behind their's which he hopes his missing vessels will have joined. Captain Gardner in HMS Iphigenia departed on 15 August 1796 with 48 ships bound for Ireland up the Bristol Channel, after which he was to head for Spithead and await orders. Admiral Colpoys and his squadron, which joined them on that day, sent HMS Concorde to reinforce Captain Gardner. He is sending a second letter (not present) with more detailed proceedings of the convoy. On arrival he found that HMS Africa was ordered to perfom quarantine although there is no-one ill onboard other that some scorbutic patients due to lack of fresh provisions. They have also had communication with all of Admiral Colpoys' squadron and all the merchant ships of the convoy, as well as passengers being sent on shore. The fever from Jamaica subsided 6 weeks previously. He asks for mercy as they have survived for 12 weeks on bad salt salt provisions.

Folio 206: Admiralty note dated 29 August [1796]. He should proceed with his orders. Another letter of this date states he is no longer required to remain under quarantine.
