Description

Folio 513A: telegram from Viceroy to India Office 20th September 1914 - German collier Markomannia was with [German cruiser] Emden.

Folio 515: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief East Indies 20th September 1914 - [German cruiser] Konigsberg at Zanzibar. [German cruiser] Emden located; neither can reach convoy before Aden. [HMS] Dartmouth and [HMS] Fox to convoy East African Expedition to Mombasa. [HMS] Chatham to proceed to Zanzibar at once and hunt [German cruiser] Konigsberg with [HMS] Dartmouth.

Folio 516: telegram from HMS Swiftsure to Admiralty 20th September 1914 - after [HMS] Dartmouth arrives at Mombasa propose she search out [German cruiser] Konigsberg. Can continue convoy programme with 5 ships of war.

Folio 520: History Section Precis, M 02053/14 and M no number. (f): telegram from Ambassador Constantinople to Foreign Office 18th September 1914 - as over 24 hours have elapsed since [HMS] Odin entered Shatt-al-Arab, Vali intends to ask Captain to leave and allow W/T apparatus to be sealed. Instructions requested. (g): Sir Edmund Slade 19th September 1914 – propose to reply as long as [German cruisers] Goeben and Breslau are not interned naval force will be maintained.

Folio 521: History Section Precis, M 02219/14. (d): telegram from Ambassador Constantinople 18th September 1914 - I have wired Consul Basra. Turks have no right to interfere with W/T on men of war, M 02219/14.

Folio 523: telegram from Commander-in- Chief Singapore to Admiralty 21st September 1914 - Commodore Hong Kong informs me that 2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall's in transport Nile ordered to go to Bombay instead of Calcutta. Cannot provide separate escort for Nile. Under circumstances should Nile accompany other British transports to Calcutta and troops be sent by train from there.

Folios 524-525: telegram from G.O.C. Bomaby to War Office 21st September 1914 - [P&O ships] Dongola and Somali left Bombay with Berkshire Regiment and Rifle Brigade.

Folio 526: telegram from [HMS] Dartmouth, Manora to Admiralty 21st September 1914 - [HMS] Dartmouth and [RIM] Hardinge sailed with convoy for rendezvous.

Folio 527: telegram from Intelligence Officer, Colombo to Admiralty 21st September 1914 - [Japanese cruiser] Chikuma arriving at Colombo sailed this afternoon co-operating with [HMS] Hampshire.

Folio 528: telegram from Governor of Ceylon to Secretary of State for the Colonies 21st September 1914 - propose to send the contingent by the prize ship Furth. The space available for cargo has been granted to local shipping firm for the voyage to Liverpool or other English port. Desire that steps be taken for insurance of Furth under Government scheme.

Folio 529: telegram from Admiral Superintendent, Malta to Admiralty 21st September 1914 - [HMS] Weymouth to proceed via Suez Canal to join [HMS] Dartmouth and [HMS] Chatham in hunt for [German cruiser] Konigsberg.

Folio 531: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief East Indies 21st September 1914 - [HMS] Ocean and [HMS] Goliath are now en route to replace [HMS] Chatham and [HMS] Dartmouth on escort. [HMS] Ocean is half way between Gibraltar - Malta, [HMS] Goliath off Finisterre.

Folio 532: telegram from Commander-in-Chief East Indies, HMS Swiftsure, Karachi to Admiralty 21st September 1914 - Vali of Basra has requested [HMS] Odin to leave Shatt-al-Arab.

Folios 535-537: draft telegrams relating to the movements of [HMS] Chatham, [HMS] Dartmouth and [HMS] Weymouth 9th -23rd September 1914.

Folio 539: telegram from Intelligence Officer, Colombo to Admiralty 22nd September 1914 - [Japanese cruiser] Chikuma left 9am escorting colliers from Point de Galle to Madras.

Folio 541: Commander-in-Chief, East Indies (HMS Swiftsure) to Admiralty 22nd September 1914 - pending arrival of [HMS] Ocean and [HMS] Goliath, can I start convoy due to leave Bombay 7th October with [HMS] Swiftsure, [RIM] Dufferin and [RIM] Hardinge probably meeting [HMS] Ocean east of Aden.

Folio 542: telegram from Secretary of State for the Colonies to the Governor of Ceylon 22nd September 1914 - deputation from Ceylon Association convinced that success of [German cruiser] Emden is due to information supplied from Colombo and urged that all Germans should be removed to interior.

Folio 543: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief China 22nd September 1914 - if situation is favourable [Russian cruiser] Askold should escort all four transports direct to Bombay instead of Calcutta.

Folio 544: telegram from Commanding Officer HMS Yarmouth, Rangoon to Admiralty 22nd September 1914 - [HMS] Yarmouth arrived Rangoon to coal, enemy not seen, leave 23rd September.

Folio 546: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief China 22nd September 1914 - reported from Madras that German cruiser has bombarded cable station there.

Folio 548: telegram from Resident, Zanzibar to Admiralty 22nd September 1914 - by wireless telegraphy, indication [German cruiser] Konigsberg is between Mombasa and Zanzibar.

Folio 552: telegram from Admiralty to Commanders-in-Chief and all ships in Home Waters 23rd September 1914 - the serious lesson to learn from sinking of [HMS] Cressy and [HMS] Hogue is that it must be recognised by all Commanding Officers that if one ship is torpedoed by submarine or strikes mine, disabled ship must be left to her fate, and other large ships clear out of dangerous area, calling up minor vessels to render assistance. At the same time it must be recognised that Captains [HMS] Hogue and [HMS] Cressy were only complying with dictates of humanity.

Folio 553: telegram from Aden to Admiralty 23rd September 1914 - [RIM] Northbrook arrived.

Folio 555: telegram from Intelligence Officer at Colombo to Admiralty 23rd September 1914 - [German cruiser] Emden with merchant ships sighted off Cuddalore 6am.

Folio 557: telegram from Admiral Superintendent, Malta to Admiralty 23rd September 1914 - [HMS] Weymouth, [HMS] Minerva have exchanged convoys. Port Said:- [HMS] Basilisk left (? 9am). Arrivals at Malta:- [HMS] Ocean, [HMS] Minerva, French Fleet Auxiliary Corte II. [HMS] Minerva takes 200 tons of coal and leaves immediately rejoining convoy proceeding to Marseilles.

Folio 559: telegram from Admiralty to Intelligence Officer, Colombo 23rd September 1914 - definite information as to the present position of the German motor ship Christian X required.

Folio 561: telegram from Admiralty to Intelligence Officer Colombo 23rd September 1914 - Masters of ships are told to avoid usual tracks and not send wireless telegraph messages.

Folio 562: telegram from Naval Intelligence Officer, Colombo to Admiralty 23rd September 1914 - [German cruiser] Emden reported left Pondicherry 2pm 23rd September steaming North East.

Folio 563: telegram from Cape Town to Admiralty 23rd September 1914 - Mayotta (Comoro Islands) intercepted wireless telegraph from [German cruiser] Konigsberg to German ships Scandia and Niagara giving them new rendevous 24th September 1914, 9pm. There are several German ships in Comoro Archipelago.

Folio 565: telegram from Binny, Madras to Inchcape, London 24th September 1914 - [German cruiser] Emden bombarded Madras last night. [British India Steam Navigation ship]Chupra slightly damaged, Cadet Fletcher killed. 2 Burma oil tanks ablaze.
