Description

Folios 452-453: Thomas Graham, Nassau, New Providence. Encloses a copy of a letter he has written to Admiral Sir John Borlaise Warren.

Folios 454-455: enclosure with folios 452-453: copy of letter, dated 11 September 1813, from Thomas Graham, late Captain HMS Laurestinus, Nassau New Providence to Admiral Sir John Borlaise Warren. Reports the loss of his ship HMS Laurestinus on Spanish Key Reef, north end of the Island of Alaee on the night of 26 August 1813. Advises that all of the crew, except for Bastian Travers, Seaman, were landed safely on the Spanish Kay on the morning of 22 August 1813, and have since arrived on 31 August 1813 at Nassau where they have all remained awaiting transport to Bermuda. Reports that the cause of the loss of the ship was a eastward current which had been running at 2 knots an hour the day before, but changed suddenly and ran strongly in the contrary direction causing the ship to take a westward course, steering nearly south until she struck the reef. Trusts that on investigation no blame will be attached to anyone on board for the loss and commends the conduct of the ship's company.
