Description

Folios 275-276: William Gordon, HMS Magicienne, Spithead. Reports his arrival that day at Spithead with the convoy under his protection. Encloses a list of the ships [item not enclosed], a copy of his orders from Vice Admiral George Martin together with the log of proceedings since his departure from the Tagus on 3 July 1813.

Folios 277-278: enclosure with folios 275-276: Copy of Orders, dated 29 June 1813, from George Martin, Vice Admiral, on board HMS Magicienne, the Tagus, to William Gordon, HMS Magicienne. Orders William Gordon to give instructions to the Masters of such Merchant vessels present in the river, ready to sail to England and take them under his protection, putting to sea on Thursday, 1 July 1813, weather permitting, and proceed to Portsmouth. Directs that Gordon, on reaching the English Channel, is to see safely into Plymouth the Transport ship, Hawksburg, with sick on board along with vessels bound for Bristol and St Georges's Channel. Advises that is he falls in with any vessel of War homeward bound he must communicate any proceedings to the Admiralty so that they are in possession of every information relating to convoys.

Folio 279: enclosure with folios 275-276: Account of telegraph messages received and sent, compiled by John Foote, Flag Lieutenant. HM Ships Venerable and Beagle mentioned.

Folio 280: enclosure with folios 275-276: defects report, dated 21 July 1813, of HMS Magicienne complied bu William Gordon and Robert Burnet, Carpenter.
