Description

Folios 242-243: James Galloway, HMS Dispatch off Bordeaux. Advises that Anthony Hares [Hare] was discharged from HMS Raisonable into HMS Dispatch but proved to be no seaman but a Chimney Sweep and always drunk when an opportunity offered. Advises that Hares belonged to one of the boats at Portsmouth and was sent by a Lieutenant on duty to the dockyard and never returned from helping to move the possessions of a Sergeant of the Marines to the barracks. States that HMS Dispatch sailed the next day and in his opinion Hayes is not deserving of any relief.

Folios 244-245: enclosure with folios 242-243: letter, dated 20 March 1813, from Sir Thomas Brown, Captain, HMS Loire, to the Admiralty. Presents the case of Anthony Hares [Hare], who was picked up by the press boat of HMS Loire on 5 March 1813 and in Hares' own words 'was drafted in March 1811 from HMS Helena into the Reindeer and then into Polyphemus, and then into Raisonable in December 1812, and from her in to HMS Dispatch until he was turned on shore by James Galloway on the night of 3 March 1813 being guilty of the crime of drunkenness' and that he has made a claim for pay owed from HMS Helena.
