Description

Folios 230-231: John Gourly, Regulating Captain, Aberdeen. States the case of John Scott and Alexander Strachan, aged about 18, Ship's Carpenters, imprest at Aberdeen and sent to HMS Adamant about 5 weeks before. Describes how the 2 men went on board the tender at Aberdeen and obtained leave of absence for James Docter, Mate, from Lieutenant Grierson on the condition the Mate was to return that evening but he deserted and Scott and Strachan were subsequently suspended by Grierson. Advises he imprest the 2 men immediately and sent them to Montrose where they had lived to apprehend the Mate. Explains that the men's relatives, realising the men were likely to be held by the Navy, used means to have the Mate apprehended by giving information to the Magistrate.

Folios 232-233: enclosure with folios 230-231: Petition, dated 22 May 1813, of Alexander Strachan and John Scott, Ship's Carpenters, Aberdeen to the Admiralty, signed by Robert Strachan, brother of Alexander Strachan and John Scott. Petition for the release of Alexander Strachan and John Scott on the grounds of being innocent of having any concern in James Docter's desertion bu their friends , in the hope that it would obtain their release, used every exertion to successfully apprehend James Docter.

Folio 234: enclosure with folios 232-233; covering letter, darted 22 May 1813, Aberdeen, to the Admiralty enclosing the petition.
