Description

Folios 156-157: John Gourly, Regulating Officer, Aberdeen. Reports the case of Andrew Moncrieff, Mate of the Lord Fife, impressed by Lieutenant Grierson as a consequence on not being able to account for how he had been employed for several years and on suspicion of being a deserter. States that the Master of the Lord Fife has taken no notice of his assertion that Andrew Moncrieff is a deserter. Encloses a letter from the owners in Leith to himself in which the content differs from [Gilbert] Scollay's [Master of the Lord Fife]. States that is a fact not generally known that there are more deserters from the north of Scotland and the islands than in any other part of the Kingdom and many of them are Masters and Mates of small craft. Advises he sent Moncrieff to HMS Adamant.

Folios 158-159: enclosure with folios 156-157: letter, dated 23 April 1813, from Charles Ogilvy, Leith to John Gourly, Aberdeen. Advises that on his arrival in Leith, he was informed by Gilbert Scollay, Master of the Lord Fife that his Mate had been impressed and states that he need not remind Gourly that Mates are legally protected and although the vessel had no cargo on board, the Mate has had the charge of her stores. Makes a case for why the Mate should be released, and for John Gourly to heed the calls of the Mate's numerous and helpless family and requests it also as a personal favour to himself and the community who have recently suffered the loss of the Doris schooner and her crew and that the Lord Fife is now preparing to take over the regular Shetland trade.

Folios 160-161: enclosure with folios 156-157: Letter, dated 22 April 1813, from Andrew Moncrieff, Aberdeen to the Admiralty. Encloses 2 affidavits confirming that he is employed as a Mate of the Lord Fife of Lerwick and that he was serving in that capacity when impressed into the Navy on 13 April 1813. States that vessels in the Coasting Trade, employed in the Transport of Goods and merchandise, as the Lord Fife is, are protected and requests that he is discharged from the service.

Folio 162: enclosure with folios 160-161: Affidavit, dated 19 October 1812, by Gilbert Scollay, Master, and William Hay, Justice of the Peace, Port of Lerwick, County of Orkney and Zetland. Certifies that Gilbert Scollay, Master of the Lord Fife came voluntarily before William Hay, JP, to make the oath that Andrew Moncrieff, 5ft 7 ½ inch tall, dark complexion, brown eyed, hair worn loose and aged about 39 years old is the Chief Mate of the Lord Fife of Lerwick and in charge of the goods and merchandise on board and that they are delivered according to their consignment.

Folio 163: enclosure with folios 160-161: Affidavit, dated 22 April 1813, of Gilbert Scollay, at Aberdeen in the presence of William Copland, Justice of the Peace, County Aberdeen. Confirms that Gilbert Scollay, Master of the Lord Fife of Lerwick, made an oath that Andrew Moncrieff was engaged as Mate of said ship in the month of October 1812 and served until 13 April 1813 when he was impressed in to the Navy at Aberdeen.
