Folios 209-210: John Gourly, Thurso. He encloses a letter from the Committee at Stromness responsible for raising seamen for the Navy. He sayes he has not responded to the questions raised but has told the Committee he would send the letter to the Admiralty. If the Admiralty agrees he could send the certificate of age for anyone who suggests he is an apprentice.
Folios 211-212: Enclosure to folios 209-210: Addressed to Captain Gourly from the Committee of the inhabitants of Stromness dated 6 May 1812. The letter sayes that men who might be eligible for service are seeking protection by entering into apprenticeships lasting up to 10 years at wages of 60 guineas for three years in some instances. The result is the county is being drained of eligible men. They ask if entering into an indenture between the ages of 18 and 30 is legal.
