Folios 190-191: Thomas Garth, HMS Cerberus, Channel of Corfu. He is responding to an enquiry as to why Lieutenant [Maunsgard] was left behind at Plymouth when HMS Imperious sailed from that port in June 1810. Captain Garth explains that the ship, which had Admiral Tayler's flag flying, was under orders to sail at 4 0'clock. Captain Garth sent orders to Lieutenant [Maunsgard] by second Lieutenant Travers to return to his ship immediately and unmoor herr and prepare the ship for sailing. When the Captain went on board at 2 o'clock he found the ship unmoored but that the lieutenant had gone ashore saying the ship would not sail that evening. In the end, given the Admiral did not arrive until 4.30 they did not sail until 6.00pm and given the light winds did not clear Penlee Point before 8.00pm. During that time they had to hove to twice to receive boats from the shore, but still there was no sign of the lieutenant and he heard nothing further of him until Captain Duncan asked him to relate the entire affair.
