Folios 146-147: James Galloway, HMS Princess, Liverpool.
Refers to a letter alleging that the death of a man on board HMS Princess was caused by excessive flogging. He reports that he was sleeping on the night of 29 April 1811 when someone shouted 'fire'. He ran to the galley where muskets were fired and a man was calling from out in the water. The man was rescued but two of the supernumeraries were missing and he discovered how they had managed to escape through one of the bow ports. Two men, James Wilson and William Woolridge were each given three dozen lashes with the assistant surgeon in attendance. Wilson returned to duty and admitted his guilt. William Woolridge caught a disease and died six days later when, in spite of a postmortem report to the contrary, his friends blamed Galloway who is concerned about damage to his reputation and asks for the name of the author of the letter of complaint.
