Refers to the enclosed order appointing him to temporary command of HMS Minerva for the purpose of conveying troops to the Isle de France, serving in that role between 15 October and 6 December 1811. Asks to be paid for that period. He also refers to an enclosed log of proceeding [not present].
Folios 38-39: enclosure with folios 36-37. James Hillyer, Captain HMS Phoebe, Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope, 15 October 1811 Writes that in view of the loss of four of HM frigates at the Isle de France, and the return of the men of war to India, the enemy has superiority in numbers. States that the land forces should be loaded onto East India Company ships at Simons Bay and convoyed to the Isle of Rodriguez. He asks Gordon to take temporary command of HMS Minerva and prepare her to meet the enemy.
