Description

Folios 191-192: Edward Grey, Regulating Officer, Hull. Requests advice on the Protection of man employed in the Greenland fishing, about which he is unclear. He wishes to avoid any disputes or difficulties with the owners and Masters of said fishing vessels. They are ordered not to press them until their voyage is fully ended, but it is not clear what this means. He has taken it that they can be pressed 24 hours after the ship has arrived and moored, or after reporting to Customs, whereas the owners believe they should be allowed more time. He is also unsure whether the Mariners or Green Men are allowed the same time as the Harpooners etc. He also wants clarification about men who leave their ships before they arrive, for fear of being pressed, which many of them do, and whethere they are then immediately liable to be pressed. When a new bond is taken out for another voayge, is the previous voyage considered fully ended, although the ship may not yet have reported to Customs?

Folios 193-194: enclosure with folios 191-192: Admiralty note relating to Captain Grey's queries.

Folios 195-200: enclosure with folios 191-192: copy of Extract of relevant Acts relating to pressing of men, and Protections.
