Folios 165-166: James Galloway. HMS Princess, Liverpool. Has received the letter, via Captain Carter of the Impress Service at Liverpool, asking him to report on the case of James Marsh, recently pressed by one of the boats from HMS Princess. Agrees that what is written in the Petition and Riggers Protection is correct. The man was very insolent to the Master and derogatory about everyone in naval uniform, and spoke as such in front of a large crowd. He therefore devised a punishment to fit the crime. He has no doubt that if he is discharged it will be sufficient deterrent to others. He was formerly a Sea Fencible, and is now fully aware of his misconduct.
Folios 167-168: enclosure with folios 165-166: W Baldwin and Swindon, Solicitors, Liverpool, to The Admiralty, 13 June 1810. Request for the discharge of James Marsh, a Protected Rigger of Liverpool. His Protection is enclosed [not present]. The yearly expense of the Protection is of some consequence to the Petitioner, William Jackson.
Folios 169-170: enclosure with folios 165-166: William Jackson and James Marsh, Liverpool, to The Admiralty, 13 June 1810. Petition of James Marsh, Rigger, an employee of William Jackson, in the County of Lancaster. On 9 June, as the boat belonging to HMS Princess was sailing towards the dock in Liverpool, the boat in which James Marsh was travelling ran against the navy boat, Master Mr Duncan. James Marsh responded angrily to a request from Mr Duncan, with the result that he was taken into custody and taken on board HMS Princess as a pressed man. In mitigation, he states that he was recently on board an American vessel, and was induced to drink more spirits than he is used to, with the result that he was intoxicated at the time. His explanation has been accepted by Mr Duncan. James Marsh has a wife, a mother, and 4 children to maintain, and without his earnings as a Rigger they will be in great distress. The enclosed letter sent to Captain Galloway, Commander of HMS Princess, has elicited a response that he cannot be freed without orders from The Admiralty as he is now a pressed man. Request his discharge, on compassionate grounds, and because of his Protection.
Folios 171-172: enclosure with folios 165-166: Elizabeth Marsh Shemeth, Liverpool, to Captain Galloway, HMS Princess, 11 June 1810. Petition for the release of James Marsh. Countersigned by three character witnesses: William Jackson, James Hind (neighbour), merchant of Liverpool, and John Witherington, merchant of Liverpool.
