Description

Folios 145-146: James Grant, HMS Raven, Barnpool, Plymouth Dock. He should have by return of Post answered your letter of the 31 December 1808 had he not been assailed by a violent attack of fever which has cofnfined him to bed. He forwards the enclosed letter from the Purser stating following a verbal order from Admiral [Bartholomew Samuel] Rowley to complete his vessel with all dispatch, He ordered her to be completed for three months for his whole complement of 95 Men though he only had 84 on Board. The enclosed letter will inform you of the number of Invalids, Prisoners and Passengers that were put on board by Admiral [Bartholomew Samuel] Rowley to whom he represented his fears for want of provisions and more particularly Water. [Details of the voyage and problems mentions:- a Fleet off Brest, putting the Bread overboard of the Western Islands]. He encloses [not present] a list of the Convoy.

Folios 147-148: enclosure with folios 145-146. Letter dated 3 January 1809 by W [?] Cowley - Purser, HMS Raven, Barnpool Plymouth Dock, to James Grant, HMS Raven. Report that having victualled on the 25 October 1808 at Jamaica to three months for ninety five men which was thought to be more that sufficient as we are only 84 Men. But on the evening of the 25 October 1808 we received seven Prisoners on 27 [October 1808] One Invalid, the 28 [October 1808] Twenty Invalids from the Hospital on 29 [October 1808] three Passengers and on the day of our sailing One more, amounting to a total of Thirty Two which is Twenty One more that our whole Complement. On the night 5 December 1808 we had 1925 Pounds of Bread damaged by water caused by heavy seas and a leak in the two Bread Rooms, which you surveyed and ordered thrown overboard.
