Description

Folios 279-281: Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull. Receipt of letter enclosing the application about Robert Kirby. He entered at the Rendezvous on 24 [March 1808]. He is about 18 years old and has been 3 years and 1 month at sea as an apprentice to John Snowden. His Master attended the Rendezvous when he was regulated and allowed him to remain. He gave a certificate on his indenture that he had entered of his own free will. It was well known that if Kirby and another apprentice who entered with him had gone out in their ship to America they intended to desert from her as soon as she arrived there.

Folios 281-282: enclosure with folios 279-281. Letter dated 13 April 1808 from Richard Kirby, 32 Great Tower Hill to John Barrow. In reply to his letter states that his brother Robert Kirby entered with Captain Grey at the Rendezvous in Hull. Refers to his letter of 9 [April 1808] for details.

Folios 283-284: enclosure with folios 279-281. Letter dated 9 April 1808 from Richard Kirby, 32 Great Tower Hill, to John Barrow. His brother Robert Kirby, apprentice to John Snowding, Ship Owner of Hull, who is not 19 nor has he been at sea 3 years left his Master and entered into His Majesty's Service and is now on board HMS Namur. He acted on the advice of others. If he cannot be discharged without finding substitutes he will comply with their Lordships' decision.
