Description

Folios 85-86: Henry Richard Glynn, Regulating Captain, Poole Rendezvous. Reports that William Gould was impressed by Lieutenant Joseph Barwick from aboard the Perseverance on 25 July. He is aged 25 and has been five years at sea. At the time she had no cargo on board, and once the crew were aboard George Penney, part owner, called Gould to sign the articles and he was impressed at that point. A letter from Sir Evan Nepean when he was Secretary to the Admiralty in 1803, sent to the then Regulating Captain at Poole, Thomas Walbeof, states that for a Mate, an entry in the ship's articles is sufficient. As Gould was not on the articles and there was no cargo for him to take charge of, he has been sent to Portsmouth.

Folio 87: enclosed with folios 85-86. Printed affidavit sworn at Poole before Justice of the Peace Mark Street by John Lambert, Master of the Perseverance, 16 February 1807. Lambert swears that William Gould is the Mate of the vessel and has charge of the cargo.

Folio 88: enclosed with folios 85-86. Affidavit sworn before Poole Mayor John Strong by John Lambert, Master of the Perseverance, 25 July 1807. Swears that William Gould has been Mate of the vessel since 16 February and is in charge of the cargo.

Folio 89: enclosed with folios 85-86. Affidavit sworn before Poole Mayor John Strong by George Penney, merchant and part owner of the Perseverance, 25 July 1807. Swears that he is a Quaker, that John Lambert is the Master of the vessel and that William Gould has been the Mate, and in charge of the cargo, since 16 February.
