This company was incorporated under various Acts (caps.322-324) of 3rd August 1846 and consisted of Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, Chester Canal Navigation, Ellesmere and Chester Canal, Newport Branch of Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, Shrewsbury Canal, Montgomeryshire Canal, and Western Branch of Montgomeryshire Canal.
By act of 1847, company was leased to London and North Western Railway Company under guarantee of receiving half London and North Western rate of dividend.
On and from 1st January 1923, company was vested in London and North Western Railway Company by virtue of London and North Western Railway (Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company) Preliminary Absorption Scheme 29th December 1922.
