Description

Folios 448-449: Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull. He has received a letter from Lieutenant Lessly with information of the defects of the tender and requests for various necessary stores. The tender was never completed when first fitted and the Navy Commissioners were informed and replied that the tender could not be caulked until she arrived at a Kings Port. Captain Grey asks for a replacement tender and for the current tender to be sent to a Kings Port for the defects to be repaired. It is a great inconvenience to be without a tender for the newly raised men. In the finest weather it would take a whole day to go tho the ships of war at Grimsby. He suggests that if the tender's decks and upperworks were caulked, the cost would be little more that at a Kings Dockyard. Also if Lieutenant Lessly could go to Sheerness in the Lynn Tender he might be supplied with the necessary stores. Captain Grey encloses a list of the men raised, list of Officers and Gangs under his orders and a three year protection for Robert Emmerson. Emmerson was impressed yesterday and was threatened to be taken to be sworn before a Magistrate. The latter confessed that he had been nine years at sea and was a bound apprentice to avoid the impress. There is another young man with an indenture binding for three years, but under examination was found to have been a sea for fourteen years and had received five guineas per month on board a vessel before he was impressed.
