Folios 446-447: Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull. Acknowledges the letter forwarded from Mr. Erwing, the American Consul concerning the application of discharge of Richard Jewel Cox, said to be American and the request for any documents confirming his citizenship. Richard Jewel Cox was impressed on 20th October and when regulated, stated he was a native of Bermuda, belonged to an American Schooner. He had the ships papers in his possession. These had been taken from the Master’s trunk in the hope they would save him from being impressed. The Master of the vessel produced the ships articles where it appeared he was Bermudian but had no document to endorse he was an American, nor did he appear to wish for this. He was sent to the Nore on the 3rd of this month.
