Description

Folios 441-442: Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull. Replies to the matter of petition from Mr. [Blenhin?] concerning Francis Hodgson and the order to discharge the latter if the case is as stated. On 10th November a respectable looking man from Topsham, Holderness came to the Rendezvous and begged for Hodgson to be apprehended. Hodgson apparently deserted from HMS Nonsuch while she was laid at [White Booth?] and has been very troublesome at Topsham and attempted to ravish a young woman. The village is too distant for the impress. A warrant was obtained from the Magistrate and Hodgson was brought to the Rendezvous by 2 constables who were paid. He acknowledged that he entered the Nonsuch as a volunteer and deserted. The reason for desertion was that the Purser has threatened a flogging. Hodgson’s Master and relatives have asked for him to be cleared and not punished and are very obliged that Captain Grey considers nor sending him as a deserter, although the Admiralty Officers may be displeased. Hodgson has been sent to the Nore. The Daily Report of HM’s ships in the Humber area is enclosed.

Folio 443: enclosure with folios 441-442. Letter dated 16 December 1803 by Mr. C. Savile [Park Street, Westminister?] to the Admiralty. He encloses a petition from a most respectable gentleman and hopes for a favourable response.

Folio 445: enclosure with folios 441-442. Dailty report dated 22 december 1803 by Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull to the Admiralty. HMS Helder, Snipe, Gellykhied, Sheerness tender and Hebe hired tender.
