Description

Folios 420-421: Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull. He reports that William Claymans who appears by the Custom House books to have a Greenland protection granted last 28th July as a Boatswain on the Manchester in the Greenland trade. He has been retained as he has no certificate of protection and claims that he has lost his current protection. The Captain asks for directions. It is likely Claymans has lent this to another person. The employer is asking for him to be given up. Captain Grey considers that the situation might set a precedent to other lending their certificate of protection. The Report of HM's ships in the Humber area is enclosed and a copy of the Certificate of Protection for the Ordinance. The Agent who acts for the Vessel here will be making an application for the man. The Vessel is half laden for the Ordinance at Woolwich and potatoes and goods for London.

Folio 422: enclosure with folios 420-421. Report dated 15 November 1803, by Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull to the Admiralty. The Report of HM ships in the Humber area: HMS Helder and Sheerness Tender.

Folio 423: enclosure with folios 420-421. Document dated 7 September by [R.M. Crew?] Secretary to the Board of Ordnance to all H M Civil and Military Officers. Concerns the Seamen: Joseph Winnicold, Master and six men who are employed on board the Mary in transporting iron ordnance. The document states they have protection against being impressed, arrested, imprisoned or hindered during their service. However, the name, age, description and the place of the abode of the person to be protected must be endorsed on the back of the document.
