Description

Folios 394-395: Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull. He encloses the report of HM's ships in the Humber. He states that John Clark. Seaman belonging to the Sea Fencibles at Ipswich was impressed by the Captain's men under orders. The Captain has instructions on this issue and questions whether an Officer of the Sea Fencibles should be authorised for leave from his district for such a long period of time. Clark has been retained until directions are given. The Captain opines that such indulgences are likely to set a precedent and affect the impress service. Clark apparently was married at Ipswich 11 months ago, he is a perfect seaman and has served eight years in HM's Navy. The Captain waits for directions and asks for the protection document to be returned.

Folio 396: enclosure with folios 394-395. The Protection Certificate Numbered 109. Dated 8 August 1803, by J. McFarland, Sea Fencibles, Ipswich. To all Officers in the Impress Service and HM Navy. This includes a paragraph on the reverse dated 3 September 1803 by Lieutenant S. Jeaffreson, a description of John Clarke aged 30 years.

Folio 397: enclosure with folios 394-395. The daily report by Edward Grey, Regulating Captain, Hull, dated 20 September 1803 to the Admiralty. HM’s ships in the Humber area: HMS Helder and Sheerness tender.
