Folios 405-406: Anslem John Griffiths, HMS Atalante, Plymouth.
Report of Edward Sturley, master's mate of HMS Atalante, who was sent to the hospital at Plymouth on 6 March 1801, for wounds received in the capture of a privateer, and who was discharged from there to HMS Cambridge, as cured, in April, in order to rejoin his ship, but has not been heard of since. Griffiths suggests he should be 'advertized' as a deserter among the men of war. Sturley is about 5ft 5ins tall, pitted with the small pox, a native of Bristol, and has lost the joint of his middle finger on the left hand, and two others very maimed. He formerly served in HMS Lancaster and came from HMS Royal William to HMS Atalante. Griffiths believes he may have gone to the Cape of Good Hope, to Sir Roger Curtis and that as he has very nearly served the required time, he may obtain a commission.
