Description

Folios 222-223: Thomas Graves, HMS Venus. Reply to letter dated 10 December 1798. Reports that there is no man by the name of those volunteers onboard HMS Venus. He received orders from Vice Admiral The Honourable Sir William Waldegrave concerning a man named [?] a prisoner belonging to the Company of Royal Artillery, who he was to give a passage to England, taking care to deliver him up agreeable to directions so soon as Colonel Skinner Commandant should make application. He believe as the prisoner had not part received the total of his punishment to be inflicted on him in Newfoundland, but a short time before he sailed, he was deemed not in a situation to be embarked the Commandant therefore required he would leave directions with the Senior Officer Captain Blackwood to receive him. He complied with this nd left a copy of Vice Admirals orders. He also report a Seaman Thomas Sinclair belonging to HMS Venus declared himself a deserter from HMS Royal Irish Artillery under the name of Thomas Sullen in September 1797 when doing duty near Dublin.
