Folios 124-125: John Gore, HMS Triton, Plymouth Sound. Following orders from Admiral Sir Alan Gardner Bart. [Lord Alan Gardner (1st Baron Gardner of Uttoxeter)]. He proceeded from Plymouth Sound on 8 May 1799 and the next morning was off Ushant but the weather was bad he entered the Passage L'Iroive[?], at Sun Set the wind changed and he saw a Frigate bearing North on a Starboard Tack. At day light the next morning (the 10 May 1799) the weather moderated and wind shifted to the West, we saw four large ships on our weather beam, standing to the NNW under easy sail - he made sail towards them, endeavouring to ascertain what they were but the wind became variable with frequent heavy showers and he could not approach to ascertain either their force or Nation. But from indistinct observations he thinks they were English Frigates. [Reports on ships in harbour possible receiving ships mentions:- Goulette, Passage L'Iroive[?], Parquette, Nandsee, Arsenal of Brest]. Having executed his orders he returned to this anchorage.
