Description

Folios 115-116: John Gore, HMS Triton, Barn Pool. On 12 May 1799 HMS Triton captured Le [La] Victoire French Merchant Brig bound to Brest laden with Naval Stores, Wind & Brandy which he sent to this Port but unfortunately the weather was so bad the Brig was driven onshore on Drake's Island and totally lost. The Petty Officer and four men narrowly escaped but lost all their clothing and bedding. Has subjoined the account each man has received in stock Cloaths [Cloths] and Bed and request an order that these poor men may not be charged by the Navy Board.
