Description

Folios 237-238: Davage Gould, HMS Audacious, Spithead. Reports his arrival under orders of Rear Admiral Man, copy enclosed with a report on the ship’s condition. He signaled the nine remaining ships for England as soon as he got the convoy to Lisbon. Became separated by a violent gale, 19 November. Difficulties keeping them together, mostly from Gibraltar were in ballast, Reports detaining the Olive Branch American Schooner Latt 42:55N Long 7:49W, 20 November as her bill of lading showed she carried a substantial quantity of arms, brass pieces with carriages and six ammunition wagons and Major General Allen, Vermont Militia, the ‘extraordinary’ cargo taken onboard in arrangement between him and the French Directory at Ostend for New York. Requests release from quarantine, he is from Gibraltar.

Folio 239: enclosed in folios 237-238. Admiralty Memorandum, 8 December. Send extract to the Duke of Portland for His majesties information so far as relates to the Olive Branch.

Folios 240-241: enclosed in folios 237-238. Rear Admiral Robert Man, Orders to Captain Gould. Convoy forty ships to Lisbon where most of the trade are going. When at Lisbon’s latitude to signal the ships for that port hoisting a red checkered flag and white at the Mizen top gallant, fire one gun. To call onboard any Masters at Lisbon wishing to profit for his convoy home then proceed to Spithead.

Folios 242-242A: enclosed in folios 240-241. Details of the ship, Marines and soldiers on board. Men belonging to the Olive Branch of Boston, 5. Supercargo- Major General Allen.
