Folios 200-201: Edward James Foote, HMS Sea-horse [Seahorse], Spithead. Reports that while he was in the Mediterranean Monsieur Joseph Montferré, formerly an officer in the army of Louis XVI, came aboard to instruct the officers in French, Italian and fencing. He did so well that Captain Foote allowed him to act in the same capacity ashore at Naples, where he earned the thanks of Lord Nelson and Captains Sir Thomas Troubridge and Benjamin Hallowell, who then asked the King of Naples to appoint M Montferré as a Major in his service. When he was discharged from the Seahorse, Captain Foote gave him his wages, but because the ship was then off Genoa and M Montferré was left to assist with the siege of Capua and of St Elmo, he has not been able to give Captain Foote a Power of Attorney for these wages. Asks to be repaid the wages due an Able Seaman which he paid to M Montferré.
