Folios 164-165: enclosed with folios 162-163. Letter dated 6 February 1800 from Matthew Roland, Canterbury, to Captain Edward James Foote, HMS Seahorse, Sheerness or elsewhere. Reports that in 1795 he belonged to the East Kent Militia, but deserted them and went aboard the Seahorse. There was a proclamation at the time that any deserter who gave themselves up would escape punishment, so he went to Captain George Oakes and explained his situation. He recently received leave from Mr Marshall to go to Queensferry with his son, but on his return was arrested by soldiers and sent to jail at Canterbury. Asks for Captain Foote's assistance.
