Folios 158-159: Thomas Foley, HMS Elephant. On 5 June he sent to the Admiralty the warrant signed by Admiral the Earl St Vincent appointing Peter Strachan as Schoolmaster of HMS Goliath, requesting that it be confirmed as the Commissioners of the Navy were refusing to pay Mr Strachan his allowances. In the earlier letter he reported that Mr Strachan is now Schoolmaster of the Elephant and had passed his examination at Trinity House. Asks if his earlier request could be acted upon.
Folio 160: enclosed with folios 158-159. [Handwritten copy of the printed warrant folio 157].
Folios 161-162: enclosed with folios 158-159. Certificate dated 17 July 1800 signed by Captain Thomas Foley, HMS Elephant. Certifies that Peter Strachan served as Schoolmaster aboard HMS Goliath under his command from June 1797 to December 1799 and diligently instructed the young gentleman and volunteers in the art of navigation.
