Folios 154-155. Thomas Foley, HMS Elephant, at sea. Encloses the warrant appointing Peter Strachan as Schoolmaster of HMS Goliath which was issued by Admiral the Earl St Vincent when he commanded in the Mediterranean. Asks the Admiralty to confirm the warrant, as the Commissioners of the Navy have refused to grant him the usual allowances for the post without instructions to do so. Mr Strachan is now Schoolmaster of the Elephant, having passed the necessary examination at Trinity House, also encloses a certificate of his conduct aboard the Goliath when Captain Foley commanded her.
Folio 156: enclosed with folios 154-155. Certificate signed by Captain Thomas Foley, HMS Goliath, Portsmouth Harbour, 6 December 1799. Certifies that Peter Strachan has served as Schoolmaster since June 1797 and has diligently instructed the young gentlemen of the ship. PS Mr Strachan passed his examination for Schoolmaster at Trinity House in February.
Folio 157: enclosed with folios 154-155. Printed warrant signed by Admiral Sir John Jervis, Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean, HMS Ville de Paris, 3 June 1797, appointing Peter Strachan as Schoolmaster of HMS Goliath. Warrant also signed by George Purvis on behalf of the Admiral.
