Description

Folios 234-235: Edward James Foote. He is sending the Surgeon's report of the fever and the fumigation methods used. The infection has been destroyed and no additional men have become ill for a week. 45 are still in hospital but some should be able to come back onboard in a week.

Folios 236-237: enclosure with folios 234-235 from William Burd, Surgeon, HMS Niger to Captain Foote. Report of Men attacked by fever, his opinion of the contagion and the effects of the fumigation. Men were affected by vomitting, headaches and delirium. After the first few had been sent to Haslar hospital, anyone with the slightest symptom was also sent. He documents the progress of the fever day by day. He believes the fever did not originate in the ship which was kept clean, but was brought on in clothing or bedding by Men who had been on the Swift, because Men who rolled up the bedding of Men who were sent to hospital were also affected shortly afterwards. Fumigation of the ship was carried out with tobacco, charcoal and brimstone, and burning rope. Nitrous acid was used while the men were confimed below decks and hatches covered with tarpaulins as recommended by Doctor Smyth's pamphlet. The Men came out coughing, which he suspects is irritation of the lungs caused by the fumes.
