Folios 232-233: Edward James Foote, HMS Niger, Spithead. He had asked for authorisation to issue wine as well as beer as recommended by the Physician of the Fleet who visited HMS Niger. He has fumigated the ship including using a mixture of charcoal and brimstone as recommended by Doctor Johnstone, Commissioner for the Sick and Hurt at Portsmouth. He will use Doctor Carmichael Smith's fumigation, but he believes it is not necessary as his ship is clean as has been confirmed by all medical people who have been on board. He believes the fever was brought on board in bedding by Men from HMS Swift, French transport, unbeknown to him. 44 Men have been sent to hospital, the first of whom are recovering. He asks that they are told that they can return to HMS Niger.
