Description

Folios 225-226: Edward James Foote, HMS Niger, Spithead. Mr Monk, Shoemaker at Portsea, has demanded the release of James Mackey who was pressed when returning at night to an Indiaman to which he belonged. As he had been absent from his apprenticeship for 18 months during which time he had been sewing onboard transports and Indiamen, and as a Gunner's Servant on HMS Magnificent, he will not release him without an order as he believes he cannot be legally claimed.

The Diana of London, E.Daniel, Master, and J. Parley, Owner, arrived with Lloyd Rayner, Master of the Barthia and Mary Transport on board , she having been captured by the French frigates Le Forte, La Seine, Las Ventue and La Regenerie who were at anchor at Palmas, Teneriffe. The Diana was bound from Teneriffe to London with a cargo of wine consigned to the Government. The Bonne Citoyenne, which had sailed from France under the command of Captain Le Forte, had been captured by HMS Phaeton some time ago. The Master of the Diana had not heard of HMS Jupiter or her convoy. A Dutch Officer had arrived at Teneriffe belonging to a squadron of 9 ships at anchor there due to sicknes onboard.
