Description

Folios 233-234: Augustus FitzRoy, HMS Orestes, Portsmouth Harbour. Receiving an order on 22 Feb [1794] from Vice Admiral [Thomas?] Graves, he discharged the foremost men on to HMS Resolution, but Captain Cummings complained that Fitzroy had retained 8 seamen contrary to the orders received. Vice Admiral Graves therefore ordered Captain Nicholls and [?] to board the Orestes to muster her company and to cause such men as were improperly retained to be reported to him. They investigated the men as well as the books, and found only 3 men: Frank Patterson, John Butler and John Bartlett whom the Vice Admiral ordered to be discharged, which of course he complied with it. He had had no intention of disobeying their order, but mistook what they meant as Fore Mast men : Patterson was Carpenter's Mate, the two last were not considered as petty officers being only gunners. As these men have served under him some time and there is no Sailmaker or Yeoman of the Sheets on the Orestes' books, he requests that the Board will allow them to return under his command whenever they think that the urgency of the service will permit their leaving HMS Resolution.
