He had previously recommended Gunner's Mate Joseph MacGregor to be appointed Gunner of the Redoubt, but he failed to pass the necessary examination at Chatham. Asks for another Gunner to be appointed to the battery, as she is ready to go down to Long Reach and take on her guns.
