This committee was set up under terms of Sections 32 & 33 of Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway Act of 3rd August 1846. Shrewsbury & Birmingham Railway Company was amalgamated with Great Western Railway Company as from 1st September 1854 (see special report in appendix to Bradshaw's Manual for 1855).

Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company was vested in London & North Western Railway on 1st January 1923 by virtue of London & North Western Railway (Shropshire Union Railways & Canal Co.) Preliminary Absorption Scheme 29th December 1922.

By Minute of London & North Western and Great Western Railways Joint Committee dated 4th October 1867 business hitherto managed by Shrewsbury & Birmingham and Shropshire Union Railways & Canal Company Joint Committee was to be dealt with by London & North Western and Great Western Railways Joint Committee, subsequently London Midland & Scottish and Great Western Railways Joint Committee. This committee functioned until nationalisation of railways on 1st January 1948 under Transport Act of 1947.
