Folios 235-236: Ross Donnelly, HMS Narcissus, Spithead. He is responding to the Admiralty who have asked for a report on the use of Grover Guns on HMS Narcissus. He encloses his earlier report but then goes on to write about the outcome of recent repeated trials. They used 18 pounder guns from HMS Loire, Africaine and Ledos and 24 pounders from HMS Diomede to compare with the Grover Guns. They found that as the Grover Guns were shorter, greater elevation and therefore greater range could be achieved using them. The letter continues with technical details such as the amount of gunpowder used in the experiments and the fact that fewer men were needed to fire the Grover Guns.
Folios 237-238: enclosure to folios 235-236. This is a copy of a letter and of a report concerning the use of Grover Guns. They were sent by Captain Donelly to the Admiralty on 9 September 1803. The report contains observations of the advantages and disadvantages of these guns and contains many technical details.
