Folios 606-607: John Thomas Duckworth, HMS Leviathan, at sea, Ushant South 21 leagues. Since his last report sent in by the cutter HMS Lurcher a gale has been blowing continuously, making it impossible to approach Brest but equally difficult for the French to escape it. Captain Sir Charles Hamilton of HMS Melpomene has reported that his rudder has been damaged in the gales and cannot be repaired at sea. He has ordered the Melpomene to go into Plymouth for repairs and replenishment, and has notified Admiral Lord Bridport.
