Description

Folios 569-570: [William O'Bryen Drury ?], HMS Powerful, the Little Nore. As requested he has sent a copy of his log, from the time he sailed until his return to port, to Admiral Adam Duncan. Encloses [no longer present] a copy of this log. The first order he received dated 8 September was to join Admiral Duncan at the rendezvous Northwest of the Texel by 15 to 20 leagues. The next he received was from Admiral Joseph Peyton dated 27 September directing him to join Admiral Duncan in Yarmouth Roads. He was delayed by calms and foul winds in the Downs, and so Admiral Peyton then ordered him to join Admiral Duncan at the original rendezvous off the Texel. His log will show he was following that order when he learned that the Admiral was in fact in Yarmouth, and also became aware that a large Dutch fleet was about to set sail. In those circumstances he felt it was his duty to go to Yarmouth, and while in the roads there he received a private letter from Admiral Duncan telling him to join Captain Henry Trollope off the Texel or if the winds swung to the west to join the Admiral in Yarmouth.
