Folios 556-557: William O'Bryen Drury, HMS Powerful, Spithead. Reports he has already given his opinion of his ship's company to Admiral Lord Bridport but feels he should give the same to the Admiralty, particularly because the precarious state of his health may mean he has to quit the ship. None of the crew have spoken to an officer about it, but he believes they have been guilty of various crimes and have bound themselves together for their own security. The Marines are totally devoted to the seamen, and nothing can be done unless they are separated. Recommends the entire party of Marines be replaced along with about 20 seamen. The trouble has not arisen because of either drunkenness or lack of discipline; as soon as he was able to he imposed discipline as rigorously as he could consistent with justice. The Powerful is not a disorderly ship, the crew are respectful, diligent and obedient, but they remain ready for any atrocity if they think they might get away with it.
