A list of queries to be submitted to Magistrates on the coast and other people who may have the information requested. 18 questions regarding places where the enemy might land troops, cavalry and cannon, where ships might anchor; about the availability of people who could be trained to defend the coast; the number of boats which could be converted to gunboats; the number of men who could be raised to man the boats in case of the enemy appearing; the number of men familiar with the coast and tides; where small armed vessels could lie; and how signals could be sent regarding the enemy's position. The replies include information relating to Tor Road, the River Ex, Berry, Topsham, Sidmouth, Exeter, an obilisk signal position belonging to Lord Lisburn, shipwrights John Bass at Teignmouth, John Stevens at Ringwood, and Sutton Brothers.
