Description

Folios 414-415: Sir Ross Donnelly, HMS Pegasus, Spithead. Replies to letter 3 September saying that the statement is positively unfounded: Thomas Coulston was shipped as Carpenter of the Calista which must have been a cover, he’s HMS Pegasus’s best seaman. Adds he sailed from the Nore thirty people short of complement and endeavored to get more hands at Shields. Says whilst his disaffection is evident he hopes their Lordships won’t give up a man so useful to the service.

Folio 416: enclosed in folios 414-415. Thomas Bertie, Master of the Calista, South Shields, County Durham, Affidavit, signed John Staples, Public Office, Shadwell, 27 August 1795. Says Thomas Coulson, Carpenter, the Calista was press-ganged at Tynemouth and taken away next morning onboard HMS Pegasus. Swears Coulson never belonged to or deserted from any of HM ships.

Folio 417: enclosed in folios 414-415. Form of a Contract, The Calista, Thomas Bertie, Master, printed certificate of employment. David Grantt, Mate, Thomas Coulson, Carpenter, Archibald Rendall, Cook, Robert Johnstone, Ralph Wrightson and Ralph Curry, Seamen, 10 August 1795. Working on the Calista, Shields via London.
