Folios 233-234: John Dilkes, HMS Madras, Longreach. Reports his arrival yesterday and awaits orders. Reports his ship is in a very distressed state and totally destitute of necessaries as his Purser has not yet joined her. The ships company is: 5 Petty Officers, 4 Seamen, 36 working Landsmen, with 55 Greenwich Pensioners who in fact are just of use making points and gaskets etc. and nothing else. Asks that Walter Read who is onboard be warranted Master at Arms. By his certificates he proves himself fully competent.
