Folios 178-179: Captain Maurice Delgarno, HMS Leander, Portsmouth. Sailed 6 December under HMS Adamant’s orders which he parted with 16th December off the Bolt Head. Left Oporto with forty seven Merchantmen. Lost Topmast and Main top sprung in a storm. Reports the Chief Mate of the Commerce of London laden with ordinance stores for Jamaica came onboard HMS Leander, under convoy of Admiral Christian. Regrets seeing at daylight a line of battle ships dismasted. Sends his proceedings, a list of the ship’s defects [neither present] and extracts of letters received off Oporto. Hopes his conduct receives approved.
Folio 180: enclosed in folios 178-179. Extract of letter dated Gibraltar, 9 November 1795 received onboard HMS Leander, Oporto, 4 December 1795. Enclosure for Admiral Mann was delivered immediately. He’ll not have time to write. Arrived here in HMS Windsor Castle with HMS Terrible, HMS Defense, HMS Cumberland, HMS Audacious and HMS Saturn. Unluckily they took thirty six days coming from St Fiorenzo [Corsica]. Extract of letter, Lisbon, 28 November 1795. Winds so unfavorable the Packett and convoy have returned. Fears the rest will have made little progress. HMS Magicienne arrived totally dismasted after leaving England with a fleet of nine sail of the line under Admiral Cornwallis from whom she parted company off this coast.
