Folios 133-134: Michael de Courcy, HMS Magnanime, Plymouth. Having heard that an application has been made to discharge John Bull onto HMS Espion against his wishes and consent asks that all circumstances are represented to their Lordships. Says he asked Captain Schomberg when he succeeded him as Captain to point out to him those of the ship’s company he found deserving of confidence and favor. He gave him a list of ten people adding he was sorry he couldn’t find another man answerable to that description amongst the whole company. He afterwards learning Sir Harry Neale and Captain Dickson each wanted to have HMS Magnanime’s Master at Arms he told him that under the present circumstances his answer would be in the negative. John Bull officiates as the ship’s Corporal, was never bred to arms but is principally valuable on account of his talent for painting; where by the ships guns, powder horns etc. are ornamented and set off. He is nearly fifty short on complement. Requests John Bull is not transferred onto HMS Espion or that his appointment is cancelled.
