Folio 595: Philip Charles Calderwood Henderson Durham, HMS Anson, Chatham. He has been asked to report on the case of the American Ship John, Captain Stockley, said to have been damaged by the negligence of one of the officers and boats crew of HMS Spitfire under his command. He reports that on 30 March 1793 (the morning on which the vessel mentioned in the case got on shore) when lying in Guernsey Road, he saw a lugger of a very suspicius appearance close in with the land, upon which he instantly slipped his cable and stood after her leaving one of the boats with the 1st Lieutenant behind. He refers to Lieutenant George James Shirley then 1st Lieutenant of HMS Spitfire and presently one of the lieutenants on HMS Royal George who will be able to give their very satisfactory reasons for the part he took in the business.
