Description

Folios 227-228: Edmond Dod, HMS Dictator at Spithead. Reporting that James Robertson, late gunner died whilst at Martinique & also Andrew Sutherland, the cook. He has appointed Richard Rundle acting gunner and Thomas Crawford as cook.

Folio 228A: enclosure with folios 227-228. Edmund Dod HMS Dictator at sea to Richard Bridges, HMS Fairy. Copy of letter 8 November 1794. Because of deaths and 100 men on sick list, Bridges is required & directed to lend 6 able and 4 ordinary seamen to work in HMS Dictator. Copy of letter 4 December 1794. Bridges is required & directed to hoist a blue ensign and collect and take the ships bound for Ireland safely, sailing at the pace of the slowest vessel and then sail to Spithead to await further orders.

Folios 22B-22C: enclosure with folios 227-228. Return of men, women & children on board the Ceres transport taken 22 October 1794 from St Pierres, Martinique.

Folio 228D: enclosure with folios 227-228. Copy of letter from St John Jarvis, HMS Boyne in Trois Islets Bay, Martinique, 22 August 1794, to Edmund Dod. He is required & Directed to receive on board 7 grenadier companies (originally from Ireland) & take under convoy HMS Theodosius victualler to the Saints, proceed off Point a Pitre, Guadeloupe to land the grenadier companies at Camp Belville, take on board 6 Frank Companies with their baggage, victualling them. Then to repair to the Saints to deliver bower anchor & stores to HMS Vanguard anthento Fort Royal Bay, Martinique to land the troup and await further orders.

Folio 228E: enclosure with folios 227-228. Copy of secret letter from St John Jarvis, HMS Boyne Trois Islets Bay, Martinique, 3 September 1794, to Edmund Dod. He is to remove all those considered dangerous onto cartel ships anchored near HMS Dictator to prevent any escape and liaise with Captain Osborn, the principal agent for transport. He is to under convoy HMS hospital ship Cores and the empty transports snd be ready first week October. He is inform Monsr De Buc, the dministrator General of Fort Royal of the measuresfor the securety of the prisoners and cooperate with Sir Charles Grey and Brigadier General Myers as well.

Folio 228F: enclosure with folios 227-228. Copies of letters from St John Jarvis, HMS Boyne, Trois Islets Bay, Martinique to Edmund Dod. 10 May 1794 he is required & directed to report immediately on his arrival at Barbadoes. 14 August 1794 he is required & directed to put himself on Jarvis's command and obey all such orders & instructions he receives.

Folio 228G: enclsoure with folios 227-228. Copy of letter from St John Jarvis, HMS Boyne, Basseterre Road, Guadeloupe, 9 October 1794 to Edmund Dod telling him to comply with any request from General Sir Charles Grey. Copy of letter from Charles Grey, St Pierre, Martinique, 13 October 1794 to Edmund Dod. The convoy will not be ready to sail until 20 October.

Folio 228H: enclosure with folios 227-228. Copy of letter from St John Jarvis, HMS Boyne, Basseterre Road, Guadeloupe, 16 October 1794 to Edmund Dod. Because of the state of his ship, he has directed Captain Richard Bridges of HMS Fairy to accommopany him to England. The Bull Dog will remain at the Saints in place of the Fairy.

Folio 228I: enclosure with folios 227-228. Order of sailing for the convoy for HM ships Dictactor to lead, Union on larboard, Cammilla and Elizabeth on starboard and Fairy to bring up the rear and repeat signals, sailing 25 October 1794, given on board HMS Dictator off the Saints 25 October 1794.

Folio 228K: enclosure with folios 227-228. Distinguishing lanes for the transports cartels & other ships of the convoy with directions on what to do should the French prisoners mutiny.

Folio 228L: enclosure with folios 227-228. Weekly account of state & condition of HMS Dictator, commanded by Edmund Dod, Spithead, 18 December 1794.

Folios 228M-228N: enclosure with folios 227-228. An account of the visible defects of HMS Dictatorby Henry Taylor, carpenter and countersigned by Edmund Dod.
